Book Lovers was such a fun summer book! So many “typical rom-com” elements that made for a great, easy read.

Why I read Book Lovers:

Well, I don’t live under a rock, so I’ve heard the hype! It’s on basically every summer reading list out there and I’ve been wanting to read a Emily Henry book. This one seemed like a great one to start with.

What is Book Lovers about?

The main character, Nora, is a literary agent who is obviously familiar with all the typical rom-com plots. So much so that she sees people’s lives through the lens of the next great novel, including her own failed relationships.

After one too many of those, Nora accepts Libby’s (her little sister) invitation to spend the summer in Sunshine Falls which is the setting of one of their favorite books. As Libby is about to have her third child, she longs for a break from being needed and she wants her sister by her side.

The story follows along as the sisters spend the summer checking off the boxes on Libby’s “Life-Changing Vacation List”, including dating a local. Lots of fun adventures ensue, including an unfortunate slip and fall accident and plenty of restaurant hopping at the local “punny-named” establishments.

In the end, we see Nora stepping a role that is more true to herself in a number of ways. A surprise detail is revealed that brings clarity to the whole reason for the trip which brings the story full circle and empowers all the main characters to grow in their own unique ways.

What I loved:

What a fun little story! I loved Nora’s quick wit and conversation style. It felt very natural and fun to follow. The sisterly relationship was interesting to observe as they both had differing views of their childhood which significantly shaped both of their lives in opposing ways.

The storyline was fun, albeit slightly predictable. The cast of characters seemed very playful and complete. Hats off to Sally and Goode Books: what could only be the cutest little small town bookstore. (Don’t indie book stores make every novel better??)

What I could have left:

Book Lovers is a romantic comedy, so I expected a bit of romance, but I didn’t need quite the amount of detail. Just my opinion!

Overall, a very solid 3 stars from me! This was my first Emily Henry book and I really enjoyed it. I’ve already got another of hers (Beach Read) on deck for more summer reading.
