Every Summer After by Carley Fortune is a delightful novel that will tug at your heart strings and make you reminiscent of summer afternoons on the water. A cute summer beach read love story that blossoms over the course of 6 years and one summer, Every Summer After is a nostalgic story of love that will stick with you for summers to come.

Why I read this book:

Every Summer After by Carley Fortune is yet another #bookstagrammadeitreadit book that found it’s way into my Currently Reading pile. And I totally see why! It’s a story all about people and choices, love and the people that have staying power in our lives. After seeing it over and over again, I bit the bullet and used up some amazon gift cards on a what turned out to be a great purchase.

What is Every Summer After about?

This is a super sweet coming of age story that follows the main characters through six youthful summers their junior high & high school years and then picks back up after a long separation in early adulthood. Persephone Fraser’s parents bought a lake house in a small town right next door to Sam Florek’s family. Since then, every summer and a few breaks throughout the school year Percy and Sam had been inseparable. Sam’s mom owned the local restaurant so naturally they both got jobs working in his family’s restaurant along with Sam’s older brother.

From the start, Percy and Sam’s love for each other was real and evident, but (as kids should!) they took their time making their relationship official. Once they finally did, their sweet friendship turned into something breathtakingly beautiful. Although their relationship was real, Sam was afraid he would be trapped in this tiny lakeshore town and wouldn’t be enough for Percy once they both went off to college in different directions. So, they broke it off and went their separate ways… but their hearts never did.

Years later, when Sam’s mom dies, Percy receives the call from Sam’s older brother and then returns to the lake for his mother’s funeral. After living in her stylish apartment in the city, Percy returns to the lake house and the years she spent with her summers on the lakeshore come flooding back. And so does Sam.

Of course, they reunite and their connection is as undeniable, but there are major obstacles along the way…mainly Sam’s fiancé. Yikes!

What I loved:

While I absolutely love a good beach read from the shores of Nantucket from my girl Elin Hilderbrand, there was something very sweet and charming about the setting of Every Summer After. The lake house right on the water and warm summer nights spent reading books together on the dock, the undeniable young love of Percy and Sam… it was all really charming.

What I didn’t:

It was obvious from the get-go that Sam and Percy were crazy for each other but they spent the majority of the book dodging their lives together. It was a little predictable as far as the “will they ever get together??” story line goes, but the way they danced was entertaining to follow.

My rating for Every Summer After:

I really enjoyed reading this novel by Carley Fortune. It captured the essence of summer in a sweet young love way. Every Summer After gets a solid 3 stars from me!
